Prunus spinosa:
The humble Sloe Berry found on the Blackthorn bush, can be discovered growing wild in the ancient hedgerows and field boundaries of Great Britain. Blackthorn has been planted for centuries by farmers in order to protect and secure their livestock.
Blackthorn has become a habitat for wildlife, providing nectar for pollinators and food and nesting sites for birds, while its fruits are used to make Sloe gin, jams, and jellies. The strong wood is also used for making walking sticks, tools and fuel.
Sloe Gin recipe:
A generous bushel of sloes, sugar, gin and a little patience.
- 450g Sloe Berries
- 300 - 450g Granulated Sugar
- 700ml Gin
