According to legend Winfred had decided to take her vows and become a nun, on hearing this news her suitor Caradog a Welsh noble was so enraged he cut her head from her body in one blow. It is said where her head fell a healing spring gushed forth from the ground. Her head was subsequently rejoined to her body by Beuno a holy man and Winifred was restored to life. On seeing Caradog leaning on his sword with an insolent and defiant air, Beuno invoked the chastisement of heaven and the murderer dropped dead the ground opened up and he was taken straight to Hell.
